What does cost money

Even if you apply yourself for free, some steps can cost something.

Certified copy of your passport

If you don’t want to mail the original, the office that issued your passport can certify a copy. It sets its own fee, if any.

Acceptance agents

Certifying Acceptance Agents set their own prices, so fees vary widely between agents and countries.

Postage or courier

Your package has to reach the IRS in Austin, Texas. A tracked international courier costs more than post but tells you when it arrived.

A US tax return

Unless you meet one of the IRS exceptions, the W-7 goes in with a US federal tax return. Preparing that return isn’t part of our fee, so it’s a separate cost if you need help with it.

Pricing questions

What does the $299 cover?
Preparing your Form W-7, reviewing your documents, submitting the application to the IRS, status updates and help with any IRS letter about it, until your ITIN arrives.
Does the price include a US tax return?
No. A Form W-7 usually goes in with a US federal tax return unless you meet one of the IRS exceptions, which cover many non-residents whose US income already has tax withheld. Our fee covers the ITIN application. If your case needs a return, we tell you before you pay for anything else, and you can use your own accountant.
Is an ITIN free?
Yes. The IRS doesn’t charge to issue an ITIN, and you can apply yourself by mail or, in the US, at a Taxpayer Assistance Center or VITA site. You pay only if you choose help, like an acceptance agent or a service like ours.
Are there any other fees?
Not from us: our price is the whole price. Things outside our service, such as a courier or a certified passport copy, are paid to those providers directly.
When do I pay?
After you fill in the application form. Payment goes through Stripe’s secure checkout.
Can I get a refund?
Yes, the full $299, if it turns out you’re not eligible for an ITIN. And if the IRS rejects the application because of our mistake, we refile for free.
Why pay when applying is free?
You don’t have to. People use a service to avoid rejections from small mistakes and to get help with documents. How to apply for an ITIN shows the process if you want to do it yourself.
